Indigenous Advisory Council ideas receives mixed response

In his Australia Day Speech, the head of the prime minister’s Indigenous Advisory Council, Warren Mundine, spoke about alternatives to Native Title. Key among his proposals was the idea of treaties that recognise certain claims of First Nations peoples.

First Nations Political party founder Maurie Japarta Ryan opposes Mr Mundine’s suggestions. As a First Nations person, Maurie contests both Mr Mundine’s phrasing and proposal, arguing that, as sovereign nations, only England has the legal power to treat with them.

Court ruling bans forced employee urine testing

Following changes to workplace drug and alcohol testing facilities, the NSW government-owned Endeavour Energy went to both the Fair Work Commission and the court, to try and compel their employees to submit to urine testing.

The court found that urine testing was “unjust and unreasonable” as it could detect old drug or alcohol use, rather than current use.

Scott McNamara, the manager of the NSW United Services Union, says the ruling is significant. Read More
