New funding announced to combat domestic violence

New funding has been announced to support domestic violence crisis centres in Brisbane and Townsville, and assist in the setup of a third shelter in Charters Towers. Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, Shannon Fentiman, said tackling domestic and family violence is a priority, and these programs have helped hundreds of women and children. Save the Children runs the Brisbane based centre, and regional co-ordinator Theresa Kellet spoke about what the funding will be used for.

Brisbane holds first Trans Fair Day

You may have been hearing a lot lately about transgender people in the US, after political and legal battles over which bathroom transgender people are allowed to use. Here in Brisbane, transgender people gathered for the first ever Trans Fair Day on Sunday, and I was on the scene.

Youth homelessness on the rise

Youth homelessness is on the rise, both in Brisbane and nationally. In light of this, why hasn’t the Queensland government signed off on the latest federal homelessness funding? Reclaim the Night 2013

I collaborated with fellow reporter Bec Waterhouse to cover the annual ‘Reclaim the Night’ in Brisbane. You may have noticed the protestors if you were in the city last night, as they marched the streets near Queen Street Mall, demanding safety for women, or when they continued their rally at Queens Park. As well as sounding out the crowd, I spoke to Shannon McCallum, one of the organisers of the event, to find out a little more about it.
